I always think about buying one of those multi-tray vermicomposting kits when I see them in catalogues, but I believe the one bin works just fine if you can keep the temperature and moisture in check. My next project is to build a larger bin using wood from wine barrels.

Thinking of getting a kit for vermicomposting. I might just end up putting it on my list. Would you suggest going to the multi tray installations or just a simple box?

Hi Susan, I cut the heat to 450, although it withstood the higher temp, then I pull it out after 10 min during the uncovered stage to keep it from getting too dark. I put the empty clay baker in the cold oven and then preheat, then I just roll the dough into the baker without taking it out of the oven. I've never done it with an iron pot. It's been a hot summer, and I look forward to some cooler days so I can resume baking bread! Charlene

I am eager to try my clay baker, but wondering about the high preheat. Do you just put it into a cold oven at high heat and get similar results as for the iron pot? Yours looks terrific, Charlene!

Hi Shayne, Thanks for the link. This Spring, I managed to scrape together enough worm compost to give each seedling I planted a good half-cup, but I wish I had a whole lot more. We have terrible summers where I live--many days over 100--so I worry about an outdoor bin, but maybe if I up the size, it will have more natural insulation. I'll look into it. Thanks again. Charlene

First off, thank you for living my dream for me and, via the blog, allowing me to live it vicariously. On the vermiculture project, you may need to go whole-hog and do an outdoor bin. redwormcomposting.com has info on outdoor setups. They seem to handle much more food waste and take less day-to-day care from what I've read.
